Keynotes and Workshops with David Stark

Keynote #1 – Text:  Ezekiel 47

The tidal wave of forces making ministry harder than it used to be

In this first keynote, David will cover the four major forces creating a ministry context very different than it was even ten years ago.

By understanding these forces, we will have set the stage for addressing the workshops and keynotes in the upcoming days. Text: Ezekiel 47

Keynote#2 – Text:  Romans 12:1-8

Looking at your church and congregation in a new way

In this second keynote, David will take you through how you might view your church in a completely new way; in a way that prepares your leadership to face the challenges talked about in the first keynote address.

Keynote #3 – Text:  Acts 17:16-32

Reversing the Arrow

A step by step process to re-focus your congregation outward toward the surrounding community.

Workshop #1Building capabilities in your congregation

Using LifeKeys as the base, David will show you how to take the talents and gifts of people and develop them into teams that deliver capabilities effective enough to make great ministry in your church and also bridge to the surrounding community.

Workshop # 2 - The fundamentals of a good strategic plan for the church

In this second workshop, David will talk about Strategic Planning that takes seriously the four forces talked about in the keynote address. It will introduce a way to create a strategic plan that is unique to your congregation.

Workshop #3 – Models of Reversing the arrow

This third workshop will demonstrate a series of models of how congregations are successfully bridging to their outside community in ways that also result in their having more people engaged within their congregations.

Workshop #4 – Strategic Experimentation

This fourth workshop will cover the fundamentals of a strategic experiment. David defines a strategic experiment as a well thought-out event and process that:

  • builds upon the capabilities of a congregation;
  • targets a certain audience around a church;
  • takes you through a process that engages you with the church and gives you the opportunity to become involved.

Bring your ideas to the table and make a plan you can take home.

"Y’all Come"
How does a congregation create an event that becomes to talk of the community?  How does that event shape and identify that Lutherans are different?  Trinity has created a community celebration – Oktoberfest that has grown in seven years and become a welcoming and  identifying presence in our community.  Last year we had over 2000 guests on our property for the day.  What worked?  What didn’t? Pastor Dale Sillik, Trinity Lutheran Church

Making the Most of God's Good Gifts: Impressions from Guatemala
Our Global Mission partners often have much to teach about what it means to be the Church of Jesus Christ.  This workshop will focus on sharing some specific impressions on stewardship and mission from our recent SE Synod trip to Guatemala.  What does it really mean to live faithfully in God's abundance in the midst of true scarcity?  How can hospitality, generosity, outreach, and service thrive with limited resources?  What dangers and challenges arise from the surrounding community, and from within the church itself?  What can the congregations of the SE Synod learn from all of this?
Nancy Christensen, Assistant to the Bishop

Transition and Transformation Growing in Spirit through Lutheran Volunteer Corps
Our society prides itself on freedom, industry, capitalism, and Christianity.  We tell our children to love Jesus, do well in school, go to college, learn a profession, earn a lot of money, buy a house, and go to church.  But in the course of this typical middle-class American journey, we transition from school into the "everydayness" of work and bills without having reflected on the question, "Is this what I'm really called to do?"
As we work in the industry or profession we have studied for years, we come to believe that society's rewards (high salaries, promotions, etc.) are greater than God's rewards.  In fact, we get so busy living the American Dream; we fail to experience the Christian Dream - transformation. Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) helps people live lives of transformation.  At this workshop we will explore:

.     Spiritual practices to keep your faith strong
.     Discerning your call
.     How LVC can help you live out the Christian Dream
This workshop will be facilitated by Pamela Ayo Yetunde, Program Developer for LVC in Atlanta.  Everyone is welcome to attend this workshop, and former LVC volunteers are welcome to participate.  For more information on LVC, visit www.LutheranVolunteerCorps.org or write Atlanta@LutheranVolunteerCorps.org.

Putting Teens in the Trenches: Disaster Response TeenCorps

When teens want to serve, let’s show them how! The development of this program was supported by Lutheran Services for Children Endowment, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and All Things New Ministry. In the workshop we will be discussing the call for this mission, the curriculum and upcoming training events.
